Obraztsova is one of the few singers to understand and elaborate vocally on the varied facets of Carmen’s character. Those deep, potent chest notes convey the external, superficial elements of Carmen with her unpredictable, capricious tendencies, but yet illuminates the inner fragility of a woman who has just foreseen her own death. The lachrymose quality she seeps into the vocal line is captivating vocal theatre, creating a powerful narrative for a character that could otherwise become one-dimensional.
And the acting- my god. The fear just spreads across her face, with every dramatic gesture as sincere and as involving as her singing. What an artist.
